Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has become part of our everyday academic life. You have probably already used generative AI or seen classmates and professors around you use it. Since ChatGPT's public launch in late 2022, GenAI tools have moved quickly from novelty to something hundreds of millions of people use regularly for work, study, and research.

Powerful tools like GenAI raise real questions about what they can do well, where they fall short, and how they should be used. These questions matter especially in education and research, where the line between genuine help and academic misconduct is thin.

So, what does this mean for you as a student at WUR? During your studies you are likely to encounter these tools often, so it is worth understanding what they are and how to use them well. At WUR we expect GenAI is here to stay, but it falls to us as an academic community to use it well: thoughtfully, ethically, and responsibly. The following pages introduce how GenAI works, summarize the rules and guidelines in place at WUR, and set out our principles for responsible use.
